Introducing Cathy Buckle
Cathy has been designing and making historic costumes since 1984 and making speciality dresses since 1990. She has won several awards for her sewing and needlework, including some hand-sewn historic costumes, which she designed.
Other creative interests include cross-stitch, embroidery, and designing and making crib quilts. Since 1983, she has been a member of the Society for Creative Anachronisms (SCA), a society dedicated to recreating the middle ages and the renaissance.
Cathy's Credo:
If it's not done right, do it over.
This costume, worn by Cathy, is more or less typical of the type of dress worn day-to-day by the middle class of Europe in the 16th century. It is handsewn and the design is worked in flat braid and beads. |
The idea for this costume came from a painting, "The Carrying of the Cross" (1564), by the Dutch artist Bruegel. The picture was taken at an Elizabethan Masked Ball. The costume, like most of the ones Cathy makes for herself, is completely handsewn. |

This dress, worn by Lady Beatrice, is from circa 1640, the Cavalier era, and was made for a period wedding from drapery velvet. |
